Bowdoin Street Health Center

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
Completed: 2015
Dorchester, MA

This project includes planning and design for the expansion and selected renovations of an urban community health center. The center’s growing programs and increased volumes highlight a need for more space to better serve the community. isgenuity achieved this goal by creatively expanding and re-organizing the health center.

By adding roughly 3,200-sf of expansion space to the third floor, the health center was able to add a new Health and Wellness Center to the facility. This suite is dedicated to preventative medicine and includes spaces and programming for health living. A demonstration kitchen for healthy cooking classes, an exercise room for fitness and a multi-purpose room for group learning and lecture are all complementary pieces of this new facility. Other renovations include reorganizing the lab and exam room suite on the first floor to provide an improved flow for patients and additional exam rooms for providers.

The design was approved through the Boston Redevelopment Authority. The addition is architecturally consistent with the existing building and fits into the context and scale of its urban Dorchester neighborhood. New mechanical equipment was carefully placed to be screened from the street views and larger windows with clerestories were used to increase natural light into the spaces.
